BALAY update

Those of us with long memories will remember that BALAY was founded with the prime object of creating a Youth Centre and some may be tempted to wonder why after all this time is not a reality.

The short answer is that we have yet to find a person or organisation that is ready to donate £1 million principally because major donors like the National Lottery (understandably) do not support start-up situations.

BALAY was granted a lease of the field in Aylsham Road which is a very valuable amenity and it is incumbent on BALAY to use it for the benefit of young people as quickly as possible rather than let it stand idle while we try and generate funds for a major capital project.

BALAY therefore embarked on a programme in a number of discrete stages: -

Utilities and Car Park (a planning requirement);

Junior Football;

Accommodation for Scouts and Guides;

Review in the light of the then current circumstances (major funding is more likely to be available when we can demonstrate an ability to organise and manage youth activities).

pleased to tell you that we have completed the utilities and Car Park and have on order the Changing Rooms, which will be used initially for

Youth Football. We expect the first game will take

place later this year.  This has not been an easy

task.  We have had to deal with the Building Regulations and purchase building materials and labour in a buoyant market.

We are grateful for the support from the many donors in the village. Please continue to help us to help young people.

Editor for The Round

I have agreed to take no the job of editor as long as I can get my head round ‘Word’. Roz is being very supportive and will be a hard act to follow, so please excuse any errors or omissions.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone with any ideas or articles

for The Round.

I can be contacted on 279635 or by e-mail at mikemoore28747@yahoo.co.uk.

There are still 5 or 6 places in the Cub section for age 8 – 10½ who could start immediately on a Monday night.

Anyone interested in helping as a Leader or helper with any section should be over 18 – no upper age limit.

If you wish to put your child’s name on the waiting list or find out more about Scouting please contact Vereen Marcer, Acting Group Scout Leader, on 01603 279457, or email vereen@marcer.f2s.com.  For further information visit the Norfolk Scout website on www.norfolk.scouts.org.uk to find out more about what the children do.

A Little Understanding

When visiting businesses in the village, please could drivers show a little understanding for the local residents and not park in front of their houses, and especially not block their drives.

Think of the situation from their point of view.

Buxton & District WI News – and an Apology!

On 13 October members and several visitors came expecting to hear a talk on Family History, only to find that the speaker did not turn up.

This was due to his sudden illness, and he had in fact sent an e-mail that morning, apologising for letting us down at such short notice. However, the Programme Secretary had unfortunately been called away a couple of days previously, due to the illness and hospitalisation of a family member, so did not receive the message.

We can only offer our sincere apologies to all who turned up to the meeting, and especially to the visitors, and we hope they will not be put off from joining us again at a future meeting.

The speaker has said that he had been looking forward to talking to us and would like an opportunity to do so at some time in the future, so it may be possible to arrange this.

Our next meeting is the AGM on Thursday 10 November, and the competition will be ‘Something Green’.  We shall be asking for nominations (and volunteers!) for the Committee, so members are asked to be thinking about whether they would be willing to be put forward. It is not too difficult or time consuming and we would welcome some new faces and new ideas.

Operation Christmas Child

 As I write this on a lovely sunny morning we are almost beginning this year's campaign and I know that by the time we finish the weather will have turned much colder.  Our aim this year is for 10,000 boxes and, as Norwich is twinned with Novi Sad I have asked that all the NR post code boxes go there this year.

A big thank you to the ladies who have left goods for the boxes on the doorstep when I've been out, to Eileen Spinks and her knitting friends who started knitting in January and have produced bags of beautiful hats, gloves, scarves, bags & pencil cases and to Carolyn who has  made the fleece scarves.  More schools & churches have joined in this year & I hope to bring you a full report on the campaign next year.  Don't forget, if you get slippers for Christmas .............. keep the box!

Every Blessing.

Area Co-ordinator Operation Christmas Child.

Sunday December 4th from 11.30am-2pm.

In aid of Lammas Village Hall.

There will be a huge range of gifts and other Christmas essentials available to buy: Christmas Cards and paper of a quality and price that is hard to find in shops, jewellery, cosmetics, pottery (mugs, jugs, figurines and ornaments), cakes, novelty mini-cakes which are just perfect as gifts at dinner parties etc and our usual unbeatable array of kitchenware. There is also our renowned gastronomic emporium (that’s home-made food to you and me!), refreshments, raffle, tombola and an array of fund raising wheezes!

Lammas Christmas Fayre has fast become an annual must-do event. It has developed such a reputation that people come from far afield, certainly from outside our villages.

So make a date for your Christmas shopping… and enjoy the fun.

The Phoenix Club

Many thanks to all those who supported our Jimmy Cricket Night. We had a truly amazing night resulting in a cheque for £2,000 to be sent to the Marie Curie Nurses.

As you know, 'Gloria's place' our fundraising haven of goodies at the top of my garden needs regular injections of bric-a-brac to enable us to keep the kitty full. If you have anything suitable please let us know and we will collect if you wish.  At the moment we have a great stock or books, both fiction and non fiction. If you would like to pick out some winter reading please ring on 278147 and you can view at your convenience!! All paperbacks are a staggering 50p.Thank you. K.B.

Childrens’ Society Home Collection Boxes

Boxes will be collected during November.  As usual the may be handed in at the 9.30 Family Service, or I will collect them as soon as I can.  I will try to empty them and return them to you as soon as possible.  Many thanks.

Buxton Photographic Club

The competition held on Sept. 19th was well supported and produced many variations on the theme.  Unfortunately the numbers of slides are dwindling owing to the majority of club members going over to Digital work.  We are considering altering the entry requirements for next year.  In the event the Print section was won by John Nield with Alan Kerrison second and John Cushing, John Mathers and Dick Powell tying for third.  The slide entry was won by Alan Kerrison, Diane Randell second and John Cushing third.

As usual the visit to the club by Alwyn and June Crawshaw was a resounding success and went on past our usual closing time.  These two very well known artists showed us some of their outstanding work accompanied by a very witty commentary on how it was done.  A showing of slides, this time, supported the talk.  After the talk they kindly (and I mean kindly) commented on some prints brought along by members.  We are looking forward to their return.

If you wish to know anything about the club telephone John Cushing on 01603860959 or Lloyd Woolner on 0160373748.

Brampton Harvest Festival - 25th September

The church was beautifully decorated, the children read the lessons very well and enjoyed taking harvest gifts to Rev Philip Young.

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard at the church and donated gifts, these were taken to the Children Duff Eventide Home at North Walsham.

Apologies to anyone who missed this celebration and buffet supper due to the misprint in The Round.

We did telephone and invite as many people as we could.

Norfolk Churches Trust

Thanks to all the recorders at Buxton and Oxnead churches, also the generous sponsors. Unfortunately because of unavoidable calls off only two cyclists took part in the event, but what a marvellous total they raised.

Crispin raised £152 and Margaret totalled £76.

Recorders at Buxton were John, Joy, Betty and Eunice and at Oxnead Roger, Joan, Pat, Anne, Clare, Neil, Sue, Phil and Cath, and of course Seona, who we thank for her jar of sweets every year.

Thank you all once again. Dusty.
